Salts Healthcare launches breakthrough in stoma care products
An incredibly simple yet highly innovative new product just launched by Salts Healthcare is set to take the stoma care market by storm and will come as a welcome relief from ileostomists sick of suffering from skin problems associated with leakage.
Designed by experts, tested by scientists and approved by ostomists
Now available on prescription, Dermacol is a unique ‘collar’ which fits over the stoma and can be used as an alternative to traditional barrier creams to form a physical barrier that prevents faecal output coming into contact with the skin around the stoma, whether a one or two-piece pouch is used.
Made up of a hydrocolloid, washer and collar, Dermacol has been designed by experts in the field, tested by scientists and given the seal of approval by ostomists who have trialled the product extensively for three years prior to launch and given it a resounding thumbs up. Users in the trials were delighted to discover that the collar stayed in place and was comfortable all day, was pliable and soft against the skin, and that it prevented leakage onto the skin - one of the major problems suffered by ileostomists.
Thin and flexible, the stoma collar - its height carefully selected for optimum comfort and performance - is made from Alphathane®, a special polyurethane that will stretch more than three times its own diameter. It moves with the body as the patient twists, turns or bends, staying in contact with the stoma at all times.
Dermacol's hydrocolloid has been specially selected to provide a high tack. It is soft and flexible and, as Salts Healthcare is the first and only company to receive accreditation by the British Skin Foundation for its research into hydrocolloids, users can also be reassured that is it skin-friendly.
Dermacol is incredibly simple to use and can be can be easily incorporated into users' normal bag changing routine. The product can be applied directly to the skin, prior to attaching the pouch in the usual way, or it can be applied to the pouch or flange and it is just as easy to remove as it comes away easily when the pouch or flange is changed.
Marketing Manager, Caroline Cowin said: “Dermacol is a totally new and unique product that is being hailed as the decade's biggest breakthrough within the stoma care industry. Although it is such a simple concept, ileostomists who have tested the product for us have already told us that it has dramatically improved their lives and we are delighted that we have developed yet another product that has been so positively received.”
The product is available in a range of sizes to fit stomas from 20.5mm to 38mm. It can be used on stomas that are slightly oval but not those which are retracted. To successfully prevent pouch contents from touching the skin around the stoma it is essential that the collar fits snugly, but not tightly, and a collar size guide is available with the product to ensure the correct size is selected.
